Tucked into a charming neighborhood in Greenbrae, this classic fifties ranch house was stuck in its era and in desperate need of an update. The homeowners, a vibrant couple who love to cook and entertain, sought an upbeat, artistic, and comfortable house in which to entertain guests or just relax alone.

In the march to modernity, soffits and crown moldings were removed, ceilings were raised, and skylights were added. Two heavy brick fireplaces were replaced with cool Virginia Mist stone slabs and a hip Heath Ceramics tile-and-steel hearth.

In the living room, a free-form custom rug introduces bold color and strong form, while the custom dining table's silver glass mosaic top reflects the sunlight by day and sparkles in the candlelight after dark.

In the original master baths the transformation from dowdy to fresh was continued by replacing high sliding windows, swapping out gold seashell faucets with sleek new fixtures, and adding a spa-like tub.
